S. Kumar is a contemporary Indian artist and sculptor who masterfully bridges traditional iconographic roots with modern aesthetic sensibilities. After early training under his grandfather and father, he refined his craft at the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, where he graduated first in his class with a Master of Fine Arts, later earning a PhD from the Government College of Fine Arts, Kumbakonam. His work is characterized by vibrant, layered depictions of Hindu deities—most notably Ganesha—and mythological figures, often employing a unique technique using roller brushes to create coarse, "fresco-style" textures. While widely recognized for his paintings, Kumar also maintains a deep interest in stone sculpture to explore the three-dimensional forms of his temple art heritage. A former Head of Department at the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University, he has exhibited extensively across India, Singapore, and Dubai, with his works held in prestigious collections such as the Delhi Art Gallery (DAG) and The Residency Hotel.
