OP Art (Optical Illusions) is a form of abstract art in which conflicting patterns emerge, overlap or create a mirage of movements by precise use of
patterns. My practice is about exploring Illusion. I create illusion by manipulating patterns, shapes and forms in order to take the viewer’s eye for a
ride, tricking the eye into believing that there is more going on than there actually is.
My works involve Black & White checkerboard patterns which represent thay the duality and balance of life is extremely complex. Along with these
two pure colours, there are many shades of grey that exist as well, tipping the balance from time to time. It’s often difficult to definitively judge things
as good or bad, right or wrong. Perhaps that’s the true message of this pattern: striving to achieve balance, because nothing is truly right or wrong.
My attraction to this specific genre of art stems from my inclination towards using geometry and mathematical precision to create art that encourages
and leaves room for varied interpretations, curiosity and conversations. Without digital and technological intervention, purely working by hand
brings about an unparalleled satisfaction. The world of OP art gives me an opportunity to play with constructing 3D effects that play with a roving
perspective to bring about a movement and mystery as the viewer interacts with each artwork.
On completing my graduation, I worked as a financial analyst for a year before realising that art is what fuels my being and no amount of incentives
and conventional stability can compare to the satisfaction of creating a work of art. Being an artist is a way of life – the dedication, the passion, and
commitment to your art each and every day – I look inwards for inspiration, which I then bring to a blank surface.
The process starts with linearity – creating a discipline, extensive calculations and a keen sense of exactitude to reach the desired result. Applying
thin layers of paint with acute precision leave little or no room for error that might distort the illusion and render the artwork damaged. Then the blank
space starts to take shape, the world beyond the edges blur, slowly transporting me into a meditative zone that drives the process till the piece is
completed.
In my own bubble of illusions, I create artworks that change their strong, calculated, hard edge into soft and fluid images that change with different
viewing points, but they all have something in common – a part of my soul.
